Viv's Travel Tips: Puerto Rico Meets CDC's New Requirements

Posted on 02/10/2021

Puerto Rico is in the unique position to give you the sun, sand, and Caribbean atmosphere to escape the winter chills, but without the hassle of the CDC’s new international travel requirement.

On January 12th, 2021, the CDC introduced a new requirement for all inbound international travelers to get tested for COVID-19 three days in advance, and to be able to show a negative result before boarding. Because Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, the destination is excluded from this requirement, making the return back to the mainland take a few less steps than other tropical destinations. All trips to and from Puerto Rico are considered domestic travel, which helps to alleviate some of the concerns about travelling in the upcoming months.

Of course, the CDC does still recommend getting tested three to five days after arrival and self isolating for seven days post-travel.

“Puerto Rico is in a unique position that caters to the desire for a change of pace and the feel of an international destination, with the safety and comfort that comes with domestic travel.” Brad Dean, CEO of Discover Puerto Rico, told Travel Market Report in their article on the situation.

While this does make travelling feel a bit more like normal, keep in mind that quarantine mandates, recommendations, and entry requirements may still vary state by state, so be sure to check your specific state requirements before booking. Georgia does not require a self-quarantine upon re-entering, but the CDC does still recommend 7 days.

Upon entering the island, travelers are still required to fill out a Travel Declaration form through the Puerto Rico Health Department’s online portal, get a nasal or throat swab COVID-19 test no more than 72 hours prior to visiting, and show proof of a negative result or they must quarantine upon arrival.

“Puerto Rico is a resilient destination who’s strongest asset is its people. We have come back stronger than ever from natural disasters, political unrest and we are confident that this will be no different,” assured Dean.

Please keep in mind that guidelines, recommendations, and offerings are constantly changing due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but we will be able to give you the most up-to-date information.
